SUMMARY:Justice for All: Generations Connected
DESCRIPTION:Rainbow City Performing Arts is excited to be celebrating its twenty-fifth year of creating a diverse and inclusive environment for musical expression that promotes the equity and visibility of people in the LGBTQIA+ community! As we celebrate this quarter-century milestone\, we will look through the lens of music into our past and present to ensure that we are creating the best possible future for our queer community. We are proud to have Seattle’s Lambert House as our community partner for Rainbow City Concert Band’s performance\, “Generations Connected”. Lambert House is a nonprofit which empowers lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and questioning youth through the development of leadership\, social\, and life skills. In this concert\, RCCB will be celebrating LGBTQIA+ composers throughout history by lifting up the music of these historically marginalized composers and examining how we can make generational connections in our lives and through our actions. \nOur concert will begin by showcasing music from LGBTQIA+ composers of the past. You will hear well-known classics such as Saint Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals”\, Berstein’s “Slava!”\, Barber’s “Commando March”\, and the Finale from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.  Also featured on the program is a lesser-performed\, yet monumentally important composer\, Ethel Smyth. We will perform the overture from her opera\, The Wreckers. \nFor the second half of our concert\, you will hear the music of present day’s LGBTQIA+ composers. We will be playing some very recognizable selections such as music from John Kander’s Broadway-classic Chicago\, and a beautiful arrangement of the traditional folk song “Shenandoah”\, by Omar Thomas. We will also perform some music which you may not be familiar with! Libby Larsen’s piece\, “Hambone”\, pays homage to the percussive techniques and rhythms used by enslaved Africans in North America. Randall Standridge’s piece\, “Vanishing Point”\, invites you to transport your mind to a beach as you gaze into the distance until everything escapes your vision over the horizon. And finally\, we are excited to be premiering Kevin Day’s “Song of Rebirth”.  This piece was commissioned for the Rainbow City Concert Band in 2021. Due to the pandemic\, the piece was performed and premiered virtually with each performer recorded in isolation. We are thrilled to be able to bring our ensemble together\, with you\, to perform and experience the live\, in-person\, world premiere of “Song of Rebirth”! \n      RCCB’s “Generations Connected” will be held at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center (400 S 2nd St\, Renton\, WA 98057) on Saturday\, April 15\, 2023 at 7:00pm. More information and tickets can be found at our website\, rainbowcityband.com. Tickets purchased at the door will have an upcharge of $5 per ticket\, so purchase your tickets now!

SUMMARY:The Gift of Music
DESCRIPTION:Join the musicians of Rainbow City Performing Arts for an unforgettable evening of jazz and chamber works at the University Congressional UCC on December 10th at 7pm! Featured RCPA ensembles include Rainbow City Jazz Band\, The Pentacorns\, The Back Row\, Flûtrange\, and No Strings Attached. Read on to learn more about each ensemble and their offerings to the concert! \nThe Rainbow City Jazz Band is made up of instrumentalists and vocalists alike who can’t get enough swing! This 20-year-old ensemble is a random collection of 17 musicians playing jazz with a desire to jam with one another in order to support the community. Their set this evening brings a jazzy take on religious and secular seasonal music such as This Little Light of Mine\, Whoa Christmas Tree\, This Christmas\, and The Man with the Bag. \nNo Strings Attached is a group of 6 musicians from the Rainbow City Orchestra who are thrilled to join forces for two delectable tangos; Piazzolla’s iconic Libertango and Turner’s Tango Expressivo! \nThe Pentacorns is a brass quintet composed of members of the Rainbow City Band\, the Rainbow City Jazz Band\, and Reign City Riot. You won’t want to miss these 5 sets of lips on silver as they perform Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity and Angels We Have Heard on High! \nThe Back Row\, an ensemble composed of the back row of low-brass players in the Rainbow City Concert Band\, will take the front of the stage to delight you with a setting of Biebl’s Ave Maria transcribed by our very own Caleb Gomez as well as a fun-filled arrangement of the classic Jingle Bells! \nFlûtrange will blow you away with their performance of the classic Ukrainian Carol of the Bells\, Muramatsu’s Far Away and theme music from Game of Thrones. Flûtrange was founded in 2018 when Max Baldonado\, a founding member of RCPA\, and Siva Sankrithi\, came up with the idea of an RCPA flute choir. French for “queer flute”\, and a portmanteau of Flute and range\, our group features concert flutes\, piccolos\, alto flutes\, and bass flutes. The group has performed at numerous chamber music gigs\, community events\, and senior living locations over the years\, and also helped develop and test the famed Upbeat Music App\, which allowed us to rehearse and perform remotely through the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Connection: Virtual Solo Recital
DESCRIPTION:Note: Rescheduled to June 20\n\nDuring this time of social distancing and all-out isolation\, we are not able to come together in the all-inclusive expressive space of our RCPA ensembles. However\, our family will persist! Our Artistic Director\, Tim Norris says\, “I’ve been wanting to start an interactive concert series with Rainbow City Performing Arts in our community for quite some time–a set of yearly concerts dedicated to the principle: Anyone Can Play! With this solo recital online\, we will present our first Rainbow Connection concert through which our members and community will have the opportunity to share their performances and reconnect with one another\, even while we are social distancing.”\n\nJoin us in your best dress (even if it’s only from the waist up) and bring your favorite cocktail/mocktail for a guided evening of solo/small ensemble performances\, broadcast digitally into your living room. We will celebrate LGBTQI+ Pride and the stories from our RCPA family! If you\, as a member of our community\, would like to participate\, contact Tim at artisticdirector@rainbowcityband.com.\n\nLinks to the performance meeting space (and helpful tech tips) will be provided to all confirmed attendees the week of the performance so please respond Attending to our Facebook event. These concert spaces will be an open/supportive community environment for all artists to freely express themselves against any fears and to connect to one another in unity.
